The Kyoto picture

Kyoto bookings are decided six months ahead, from another continent

Kyoto is booked further ahead than almost anywhere else in Japan. Accommodation, guides, tea ceremonies, craft workshops, restaurants that take reservations, wedding and photography services — the choices are made months in advance by someone sitting in Sydney, Singapore, London or Los Angeles, searching in their own language. A Japanese-language local listing will never appear in that search. Content will, and it is the whole channel.

What has changed recently is what the content should be arguing for. Kyoto has more visitors than its most famous districts can comfortably hold, and the commercial opportunity has moved to the shoulder seasons, the early mornings, the quieter neighbourhoods and the experiences that are not on the standard route. Pages that help someone plan a trip in February rather than April, or in Nishijin rather than Higashiyama, now serve both the business and the city — and they compete against almost nothing, because everyone else is still writing about cherry blossoms in April.

Underneath the visitor economy sits a smaller but genuine export market: traditional crafts, ceramics, textiles, knives, tea and the workshops that make them, selling to buyers and collectors abroad who search in English by material and technique. Those pages are capability pages in all but name, and very few of them exist.

The work

What SEO for a Kyoto business involves

Planning-stage content in the visitor’s language

Written for someone deciding months ahead on another continent: timing, routes, what to expect, what it costs, what is nearby.

Pages that sell the quieter season and district

February over April, early morning over midday, Nishijin over Higashiyama. Useful to the reader, and commercially valuable, and very few businesses has written it.

Export pages for crafts and makers

Ceramics, textiles, knives, tea. Overseas buyers search by material and technique in English, and these pages barely exist.

Japanese-language work through an in-market partner

The domestic visitor and local market handled by people who write it, under one plan and one report.

Questions we get

Kyoto SEO, answered plainly

Does a Google Business Profile help if our customers book from abroad?

It helps at the very end, with the visitor already in the city deciding where to eat tonight. It does nothing for the booking made six months earlier from another country, which is where most of the revenue is decided. Both are worth doing and they are not the same job.

Should we really be promoting the quiet season?

Commercially, it is often the best-yielding thing you can do. Peak weeks sell themselves and the shoulder weeks do not, so the marginal booking is worth far more — and the search competition for “Kyoto in February” against “Kyoto cherry blossom” is not close. It also is what the city needs, which makes the content easy to write honestly.

We sell crafts to collectors overseas. What works?

English pages organised by material, technique and use rather than by your own product names. Overseas buyers and collectors search for the craft, the process and the maker tradition, and almost no Kyoto workshop has published pages that answer those searches.

How far ahead do we need to publish?

Six to twelve months before the season you want to sell, because rankings take time to form and the trip is planned long before it happens. Anything published during a season is aimed at the following year.

How long does this take in Kyoto?

English visitor content usually takes six to twelve months to mature, and then compounds season after season with very little maintenance. Local Japanese-language terms move on a normal timetable. See how we manage Google Ads if you need to cover a first season.
